Android 4.4 KitKat reaches the Google Nexus One, sort of..

For many of us, remembering the Nexus One is bringing back some good memories. Most of us still find this to be one of the greatest Android phones of all time, and if you’re still using one or own one, please enjoy our jealousy for a couple of minutes. Sadly, the fact that the device didn’t enjoy the benefits of Ice Cream Sandwich and is still stuck to Gingerbread is the main reason why we know that most of us were forced to move on to more powerful hardware.

That said, one of the benefits of KitKat is the fact that it was designed to run on low-powered hardware. It was only a matter of time before the communities began porting the OS to older devices, and this time, the Nexus One just got lucky. You can find a custom ROM at XDA-Developers that’ll get you the goods today, though be warned; it’s still a work in progress. There are some reported boot-loop issues, aside from problems with running the camera, or with trying to get screenshots. Still, you’re running KitKat on your Nexus One, and judging by the fact that you’ll most likely have to wait for the OS to reach your current phone, it doesn’t hurt to pull this old beauty out of the drawer and give the new operating system a test drive.

Do you still own a Nexus One? Mine is full of battle scars, but it’s still there, and you bet I’ll give this a try.
