Last year, we saw the legal confrontation between Samsung and Apple result in a big win for Apple, with the jury awarding it over a billion dollars in damages. You’d think a verdict would be the end of things, but disputes over the total amount Apple should get from Samsung has been hotly disputed. Back in March, we saw the judge vacate nearly $450M from the damages Apple was due, but even then this was far from over; we still needed a new trial to decide on the rest of the penalties Samsung must pay. That’s been underway, and today a verdict finally comes in.
On top of the $600M Samsung already had to pay Apple, it’s now on the hook for an additional $290M. Apple wanted $380M, so while it didn’t get quite what it had in mind, this verdict is still hard to see as anything other than a victory for Apple.
Still, considering the sort of cash Samsung is able to throw around, even a big jury award like this isn’t likely to make a huge impact on its finances. We could also still be looking at appeals, so Samsung might be able to shave that down a little in the months to come.
