Windows Phone’s next major update, whether you’re calling it Blue or 8.1, is in the pipeline for 2014. From what we’ve heard so far, it sounds like some significant changes are in store for us, like possibly allowing manufacturers to ditch capacitive buttons on their phones and move to virtual on-screen buttons. Today we begin to hear about just how WP8.1 might arrive, as a rumor attempts to name the first two handsets that will launch with the platform in place.
Remember the other day when @evleaks revealed a whole bunch of codenames for upcoming Nokia models? One theme we saw was the use of a couple James Bond-related names, and now the tipster is back with the claim that those two – Moneypenny and Goldfinger – will be the pair of Nokia phones that introduces us to Windows Phone 8.1.
That’s not much to go on at the moment, but it does help narrow down another mystery. We speculated on a few possible meanings of the rumor that the Nokia Normandy would be a “missing link” of sorts, including that it might be the link between WP8 and 8.1; seeing these other phones named now as the launch WP8.1 models has us ready to drop that theory and focus on another – like how Normandy might be some kind of Windows Phone/Windows 8 crossover.
