2014 may see Samsung focus less on flagship smartphones


Samsung continues to dominate the smartphone industry, but that doesn’t mean the company has to see fit to just keep on doing what it has been, devoid of any introspection. To the contrary, reports out of South Korea suggest that Samsung plans to shift its focus going forward, and we could see sales of tablets and low-to-mid-range handsets drive its 2014 revenue growth.

According to industry sources, Samsung hopes to boost smartphone sales by 15 to 20% next year. We’ve been talking a lot already about expectations for the Galaxy S 5, and how Samsung might be rushing it to market to pick up the slack left by less-than-stellar GS4 sales; this report suggests that the GS5 could still hope to outsell the GS4, but not by some runaway margin. Instead, Samsung would have to find the bulk of its mobile growth elsewhere.

That’s precisely where tablets and lower-end phones come in, as it’s these areas where Samsung still may find itself able to make substantial inroads. None of this is to say that we won’t see 64-bit Exynos chips, the possibility of metal bodies, and the continuation of high-end lines like the Galaxy Note, but that we’ll probably also see a lot more from Samsung that’s more in line with the needs of budget-minded smartphone shoppers.
