According to a recent Bloomberg report, based on information from “people familiar with the situation”, AT&T is working for a potential future takeover of Vodafone, which should happen, according to the sources, as early as next year. Formal negotiations have not yet been started though; however, AT&T is evaluating which Vodafone assets to buy (and which to leave for others to grab).
The report claims that the North American carrier is also interested in UK carrier EE as an alternative target. Analysts aren’t surprised; “buying Vodafone seems like an easy decision for AT&T given the value of their stock and the still-low interest rates”, said one, from New York’s BTIG LLC. If the merger should happen, AT&T and Vodafone would have more than 500 million subscribers, giving the carrier enough power to challenge key players like Google or Apple, as stated in the report.
