Nexus 5 needs a mandatory software update before it will even work

We’re no strangers to seeing brand new smartphones get early software updates. Little issues can slip through the crack even with diligent testing, and sometimes a quick update is needed to stomp-out a bug. The Nexus 5 just went official yesterday, and early orders have already shipped, meaning it won’t be long before the smartphone is finally in users’ hands. From what we hear, though, all these Nexus 5 early adopters will have to install a mandatory software update before they can even finish setting up their phones.

It’s the necessary nature of this update that makes it so different from other launch-time updates. Reportedly, this is because Google and LG didn’t want to have Nexus-4-style stock problems for the Nexus 5’s release, so phones will be shipping without the final Android 4.4 build installed – a necessary sacrifice in order to get enough units put together and ready to ship on time.

As a result, users will be compelled to install the update on their own, and won’t be able to complete device setup until that’s taken care of. The exact size of the update may vary based on region, and we’ve heard figures in the 50MB-140MB range.
