LG G Flex announced with curved screen, self-healing back cover

We’ve seen the LG G Flex make its unofficial debut recently but today the South Korean manufacturer decided to officially unveil its first curved-screen featuring smartphone. Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Round, that has a screen curved towards the edges, the LG G Flex has a curved screen from top to bottom.

Key features of the phone are the flexible OLED screen of 6-inches with a 720p resolution, a quad-core 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera, as well as the 3,500 mAh battery. According to LG, using such a curved display has its advantages: aside from ergonomics — following face contours — the G Flex will also improve call quality by placing the microphone closer to the mouth. …and there’s also the “IMAX-like experience” you get, according to LG, when using the phone in landscape mode.

There are other world firsts in the G Flex, aside from the curved screen, like the curved battery, powering the phone. Software-wise we’re not seeing any particular features being called out, that utilize or take advantage of the curved screen. Still, LG specifically calls out buttons on the back, a la G2, as well as QTheater (with quick access to photos, videos and YouTube), Dual Window (that divides the wide 6-inch screen into two separate windows for more effective multitasking), Swing Lockscreen which alters the image on the lockscreen depending on how the G Flex is held, and a couple more.

LG is boldly calling out the “self-healing” technology of the G Flex, which consists of an elastic coating on the back, with “the ability to recover from the daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks that un-cased smartphones are likely to receive, keeping the G Flex looking newer longer”. We can’t wait to scratch it!

November is the month for the G Flex in South Korea but there’s no word on pricing or availability internationally.
