iPhone 5S name gets carrier support

For all the talk we’ve been making about the iPhone 5S (and 5C), it’s important to remember that these names are far from official. That 5C packaging we saw was pretty suspect, and there’s been little assurance that either phone would definitely arrive with these names. As we lean forward into September, and that anticipated launch event on the tenth, we’re beginning to see signs that these names could be confirmed.

Japanese carrier au by KDDI is one that even we in the West run across from time to time, and now it looks like it might have inadvertently thrown some support behind the iPhone 5S name. While it’s since been removed, not long ago the carrier’s page for the iPhone 5 contained some unused text markers for the iPhone 5S, hiding away behind the scenes.

Surely by this point, with a launch just weeks away, major carriers know what to expect from Apple, so this might be the closest thing we’re going to get to a leak straight out of Apple itself. And really, though it’s not like we had another name in the running besides iPhone 5S, it’s still nice to see confirmed by someone in the know.
