Going back a little over a month by now, we’ve been fielding rumors of the HTC Zara, a smartphone first revealed to us by means of some specs and that codename, and later showing up in renders. Zara’s always been a bit of a tough nut to crack, and we’ve scratched our heads at some length trying to work out how the phone might finally arrive, and where precisely it would fit into HTC’s existing lineup. Our feeling was that the hardware as described felt more powerful than a Desire 600 – the top of the Desire food chain – yet a bit less capable than a phone like the One Mini. If a new rumor is to be believed, we weren’t too far off on our assessment of where Zara might fit, as it’s now tipped to arrive as the HTC Desire 601.
That comes up a little short of the Desire 800 idea we had, but makes a fair amount of sense. After all, both the 600 and Zara share a 4.5-inch qHD display and 1.2GHz Snapdragon SoC, but while the 600 runs a Snapdragon 200, this 601 should get a 400.
Separately, the HTC “Zara Mini” has been supposedly identified as a handset in development as the Z3; no word yet on its launch name.
