You ever get that feeling when you’re using Google Maps for iOS or Android that, while you’re very satisfied with the app in general, you wish there were more prominent advertisements eating up map space? Worry not, for today Google announced a new way it’s pushing ads through Google Maps.
The ads, which Google insists are “more attractive for users,” appear at the bottom of the screen when conducting searches for local businesses or attractions. Beyond just telling you about these advertisers, Maps will also be ready to spit out directions leading you right to them. You can also expand the ad’s card to get more info on the business, including details like operating hours and contact info.
All snark aside, these ads are what make Google Maps free to use, and it’s not like the app was ad-free to begin with; this is just a new look to things. If they help you find businesses that interest you, so much the better. The rest of us can just tune them out and keep on using Maps like we always did.
