In the weeks leading up to this year’s Google I/O, we saw a number of leaks concerning a new multi-player gaming service Google appeared to be cooking up. Sure enough, we got an announcement of new gaming extensions to Google Play Services, including achievements, matchmaking, and leaderboards. At today’s Google event, launching the new Nexus 7 and Android 4.3, we got news of one more component to this effort, the new Google Play Games app.

The app gives gamers an all-in-one package bundling game discovery, getting involved with mutli-player competitions, and keeping track of your friends’ progress with their own games. In a sense, it seems like an extension of the Play Store, but with a heavier social focus and obviously a gaming-only filter.

If you are even casually interested in Android gaming, this is probably an app you’ll want to check out – for heavy Google+ users, that’s even more true. It’s available in the Play Store today, supporting Androids running Froyo or better.
