With all the leaks over the weeks leading up to yesterday’s Nokia Lumia 1020 launch, we went into the event knowing a heck of a lot about the phone itself. Things were a little less clear, though, concerning the phone’s camera grip accessory. It first showed up when mentioned in FCC certification documents, and we eventually got to see a not-too-revealing leaked picture of the hardware. Ultimately, we got the full story on the accessory yesterday, including its not insignificant price: an extra $80 on top of the premium price the 1020 already demands. Luckily, it turns out that there’s at least one way some of you might be able to score the camera grip for free.
All you have to do is place your order for the Lumia 1020 through Microsoft, rather than with AT&T or a third-party retailer. Pre-orders will start next Tuesday, July 16, and customers who pick up the phone on-contract will get themselves a free camera grip.
Microsoft says that only a limited quantity of these free grips will be made available, so act fast if you’d like to snag one. The 1020’s $300 on-contract price may still be a little hard to swallow, but an $80 freebie sure goes a long way towards making that go down a little easier.
