Way before the HTC One launched, before we had even heard that name, we were following new of the handset as HTC’s codename M7. Similarly, we’ve seen rumors about the HTC M4 evolve into those of the HTC Mini. Now we’ve got one more M-series codename to keep track of, with rumors suggesting that HTC is working on the M8 as next year’s Android heavyweight, but only after the company comes out with a new version of this year’s HTC One.
This rumor is seriously light on details at the moment, but is clear that this model wouldn’t launch until 2014. Separately from this M8 business, there have been suggestions that HTC might be ditching the Butterfly/One duality and a future phone like this could go more with the Butterfly’s plastic construction than the One’s metal.
As for a new One this year, we’re again short on specifics, but at least this time we can make some educated guesses. It wouldn’t make sense to change the display or anything, but upgrading that Snapdragon 600 to an 800 could be a good start, especially with what Samsung’s doing over in South Korea. With One sales beginning to slump, that might be just the jump-start the handset needs.
