Custom Google Play edition ROMs start arriving for existing handsets
When the stock Android Google Play edition project got announced last month, we wondered what the arrival of these new versions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 would mean for users who has already bought the regular skinned-up versions of this hardware. HTC in particular spoke up about the possibility of letting existing owners of the One transition their phones over to the GPe experience. We’ve yet to hear HTC follow up on that idea, but now that the GPe have arrived, custom ROM options have arrived to give you pretty much the same thing.
If you’ve got a GSM HTC One, you can now flash a ROM that will largely transform your phone into the experience you’d get from the new Google Play edition. It runs that same stock Android 4.2.2 and has the updated camera app we’ve been talking about.
While this release reportedly seems to work fine in general, we are aware of at least one issue: the phone’s data usage chart is broken, so this might not be the best daily driver if you’re on a smaller data tier.
If you’re a One owner and decided to give this a shot, let us know in the comments what you think.
