Xperia ZU possibly pictured on Sony invite, alongside stylus

We just wrapped-up talking about the upcoming phablets from HTC and Sony, looking at what effect their launches might have on the Galaxy Note lineup. With neither device yet official, that meant relying on a lot of rumors and leaks. Already, though, we’re starting to close in on a formal launch for at least one of these guys, with what sure looks like the Xperia ZU showing up on a new invitation Sony’s been distributing.

Sony promises a “big surprise” for July 4, and the combination of that tall, slim device profile and the impossible-to-ignore presence of a stylus (writing that we should remember to mark our calendars) sure seems to strongly suggest that the company will have Xperia ZU – or Xperia Z Ultra – news to share.

Rumors about the ZU’s hardware have generally been consistent, naming specs like a Snapdragon 800 SoC and 1080p “Triluminos” 6.44-inch display, but honestly we’ve had very little corroboration for those figures, either – that needn’t mean they’re wrong, but we’d still love to see some official-looking documentation on the ZU just to put our minds at ease.

Update: Here’s a new image purporting to be a head-on shot of the ZU:
