Samsung could be courting Jay-Z for major mobile deal

If there’s one thing Samsung’s good at, it’s knowing how to spend money. Perhaps more than any other smartphone manufacturer out there, Samsung is a master of promotion, and has both the deep pockets and the know-how to coordinate the massive advertising blitzes that have led to the company’s off-the-charts sales. The latest Samsung marketing effort to be reported concerns a rumored yet-to-be-finalized arrangement between the smartphone heavyweight and rapper/media mogul Jay-Z.

Details on this arrangement are still scarce, but we could be talking about a deal worth as much as $20M. That’s raised a lot of questions about just what might be involved here, and ideas from a new music streaming service (so hot right now) to something as simple as product placement or straight-up promotion have been fielded.

The one idea we haven’t heard much about, and right where our thoughts went upon hearing about Samsung and Jay-Z, would be an affiliation like HTC has with Dr. Dre’s Beats Audio. Could we see Samsung phones with “Jay-Z approved audio” (obviously, with the kind of much catchier name $20M in marketing money lets you come up with)? With the deal reportedly set to go down within the next few weeks, we just might learn by sometime early this summer.
