Yesterday, we got what seems to be our first real look at the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active, the waterproof version of the Galaxy S 4 that’s been the subject of a number of rumors in recent weeks. What we saw looked great, and the rumored specs suggested that the phone would keep much of the original GS4’s abilities, only really taking a small hit when it came to camera resolution. As Pocketnow reader Amer Lukac pointed out in the comments, a video of the GS4 Active has surfaced as well, only this time the specs attached to the model aren’t quite as grand.
The good news first: the video seems to confirm that very same external design we saw yesterday, maintaining the idea that the phone won’t have an excessively bulky build, despite its robustness.
The problem is that the phone in this clip is reportedly running only a Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960, a dual-core SoC. What gives?
One of the big clues to the GS4 Active’s SoC was the Adreno 320 GPU revealed in one of yesterday’s screenshots. The MSM8960 only has an Adreno 225 – in fact, no S4 Plus has a 320.
What we’re thinking is that this might actually be powered by the MSM8960T, a dual-core S4 Pro chip that does, indeed have a 320 – this is the same chip powering the Sony Xperia SP.
So, maybe we really are stuck with a dual-core phone. That’s a shame, because we were really hoping to see some GS4-class performance.
