If you want your smartphone to sell in record numbers, that means promoting the heck out of it. To do that, you’ll need some sharp-looking images of your hardware, whether for magazine ads, billboards, or placement online. We end up sseeing so many of these pictures on a daily basis that we can easily take for granted all the work needed to get these smartphones looking as hot as they do. Photographer Peter Belanger recently sat down with The Verge to talk a little bit about his work in the industry.
Belanger works with lots of clients, but one of the highest-profile, along with having a reputation for great-looking ads, is Apple, where he’s shot everything from laptops to the iPhone to the iPad.
While Belanger turns to software to touch-up and enhance his shots, he’s clear that it’s just as important to put in the work to make sure what the camera’s capturing looks great in the first place. In the time-lapse video below you can see an example of what a smartphone photoshoot takes, endlessly tweaking light sources to get the shadows just the way Belanger wants them.
