Report Claims Apple Returned 8 Million Faulty and Malfunctioning iPhone 5 Units, Factory Denies

Eight million units; most smartphone makers don’t even sell this many phones but apparently, according to recent reports, Apple has returned exactly this number of iPhone 5 devices to the factory. Before you read too much into it, make sure to treat everything above and below with a fair dose of skepticism, because even the reports themselves are conflicting.

The China Business Journal was quoting an unnamed source within Foxconn — better known as Hon Hai in China — claiming Apple has returned five million iPhones because of either damaged appearance or malfunctioning. Same source claimed that the number of phones has now reached eight million.

However, Hon Hai Group has denied the information (but Apple didn’t comment). The report also claimed that said (alleged) return would cost the Hon Hai Group anywhere between 1 and 1.6 billion Chinese Yuan ($161.87 – $259 million) to 1.6 billion Chinese yuan.
