Unususal-Looking Samsung Smartphone Identified

A few days back, we got to check out a series of pictures that might have been depicting some new smartphone designs Samsung had been playing with, in a big departure from its usual look for Galaxy hardware. All we had to go on were the images themselves, without any real supporting details, so it was all a bit mysterious. Now we’re starting to get to the whole picture, with the handset in those photos identified as a Galaxy S 4 prototype.

You might remember that in the months leading up to the launch of the GS4, we had heard that Samsung was still playing with a number of designs, and even late rumors seemed unsure how it might go forward. Well, now a supposed Samsung insider is saying that the phone in those pictures is just one of those developer prototypes that didn’t make the final cut.

While we can’t say if this is a look Samsung will consider again for a future phone, it’s still interesting to learn how this handset fit into the company’s plans. Of course, we’ve still got questions, like does that little notch we saw, presumably for a stylus, confirm that Samsung was experimenting with giving the GS4 an S Pen? We also wonder if this design was just used as a blank slate of sorts upon which to experiment with different internal hardware, or if it was ever on the table for a possible commercial release.
