Twitter #music Now Official, Launches On iOS But Android Coming Soon

After being present in the rumors recently, Twitter #music is now official as the social networking giant has officially made the announcement today. The offering is referring to music discovery, and, as the company states, it is a “new service that will change the way people find music, based on Twitter”.

Since Twitter is so popular and a lot of data is being exchanged, the service will monitor and use Twitter activity, including tweets and engagement, to “detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists”. If you’re into music than you’ll like how Twitter #music will bring artists’ Twitter activity in the highlight; you’ll then be able to visit their profiles and check out the artists they follow as well as listen to songs by those artists. You’ll also be able to tweet songs right using the app.

…except if you’re Blake Shelton

There will be three sources to Twitter #music: iTunes (which will provide the previews), Spotify or Rdio (account holders can listen to full tracks). Other music service providers will be added in the future.

The way this will all work is simple: artists and people you follow on Twitter will tweet out songs which you can check out using the #NowPlaying hashtag, where you can see and hear said songs.

The service is currently only available on iTunes, in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Android support as well as other regions will be added in the future. The web version will be available in a few hours at music.twitter.com.
