For those of you who thought you’d never read this headline, well, it’s happening. After years of trying to figure out a way to reach iOS customers with Apple’s full ban on pornography, Playboy has finally launched an app for iOS, that’s curiously just for the iPhone. Now, even though the app is retailed as free, you really have to pay $1.99 a month for their subscription service, which in a way makes sense for all the content you’re getting, since you have to pay for the magazine, right? Wrong!
Sadly, as with a ton of things for iOS, there’s a catch to this app. Yes, this app is published by Playboy officially, but that $1.99 is not going to get you anything that you’re really paying for the magazine. Instead, the subscription is only for bringing you everything else that Playboy is about, and yes we’re talking about all those other pages that we usually skip. It focuses on bringing you some exclusives, but mainly the original lifestyle content like Food, Drink, Style, Travel. And yes, there are a couple of celebrity interviews, and even an interview with one of the Playmates, but wearing clothes that is.
According to the publisher, this is more of a pilot program to test the waters on making some income through additional channels. Hopefully they’ll get a sense for how much people don’t really use the magazine for anything else than what’s on the rest of it, but hey, there’s always the real Playboy through HTML 5 for some extra cash. If you’re interested on giving the app a try, here’s the link to iTunes.
