Google Play already gives Google a place to keep a whole bunch of disparate content under one roof, containing everything from apps to magazines. Based on some analysis of code used for the web-based Google Play Store, it looks like Google could be preparing itself to add one more group to the types of content Play provides, putting the framework in place for Google Play News.
Text strings present in Play Store javascript reference Google Play News, along with subscriptions to News content. It also looks like Google will be using yellow to signify News content.
For now, there’s been no similar findings in the Play Store APK, so we’re still probably looking at a new version of the app arriving before Play News goes live, but unless Google decides to really switch directions here, it seems likely that we’ll be seeing its introduction in the near future. Obviously, there’s no word yet on content partners Google might be tapping for News, so we’ve still got a lot to look forward to learning about.
