Twitter’s got its own built-in photo sharing, and you can always pair it with Instagram if you’re looking to mix things up with some effect filters, but what if a still image just won’t cut it for what you’re trying to share with your followers? Twitter snatched-up a company called Vine back in the fall, and today it launches the new Vine video-sharing service, with an app available for iOS devices.

Twitter is all about brevity, so Vine restricts its clips to six-second segments (though you can always go shorter). Like an animated GIF, they’ll loop endlessly, and while this sort of short recording window isn’t really the most useful for archiving important events, it’s a nice, quick way to give someone a window into your world.

The Vine clips support sound, and while the initial app is Apple-only, Twitter says that it’s working on porting things over to be available on other platforms; there’s no word yet on just where it’s headed next, but we’ll keep our ears open for news of progress towards that end.
