Little by little, we’ve been learning more about Sprint’s plans to catch up with the rest of the big US carriers and start offering Windows Phone 8 devices later this year. First, the carrier clued us in that WP8 phones would be available “soon”, followed then by news that “soon” meant more like “sometime this summer“. That far out, we had to wonder if Sprint would be selling this past fall’s Windows Phone 8 hardware with Sprint-compatible radios, or if was waiting on second-generation WP8 models. Today, a few comments form a Sprint exec strongly suggest that Sprint won’t be dragging up any of last year’s WP8 phones when it finally start carrying the platform.

Director of Device Delivery Ryan Sullivan explains that, when Sprint does release WP8 phones, “they’ll be current.” He continues, “we’re working for current product launches, and not necessarily to launch on six-month-old hardware.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean that Sprint will be debuting any brand-new WP8 models for its launch, and it might pick up some that we see released between now and then, but it sounds like the carrier is going to be trying very hard not to be seen as making a half-hearted gesture with its late-to-the-game Windows Phone 8 support.

Additionally, Sullivan reiterated the carrier’s interest in Tizen, as well as possibly selling a Firefox OS model.
