Last week HTC and Apple announced a ten-year-long licensing deal but the exact details of the settlement were not made public. Samsung, who is facing legal actions defending itself and fighting Apple back in courtrooms across the globe –and US specifically– suddenly became interested in the specifics of the Apple-HTC agreement, for its own defense.
The question at hand is whether all of Apple’s patents were included in the deal (and thus, those used to fight Samsung) or just some. If all patents are licensed, including the one referring to “user experience”, this could threaten Apple’s present and future attempts of seeking bans for infringing products, like Samsung’s.
The South Korean company has recently asked a US judge to rule and thus twist Apple’s hand in turning over a copy of the HTC settlement document. Without having solid proof though, Samsung claims that it is “almost certain” that the HTC deal includes some of the patents which Apple is trying to enforce against the South Koreans.
