We had a vague general idea about iPad mini and fourth generation iPad sales judging by the pre-orders which sold out one after the other but now Apple has published official sales numbers and they are looking good. These numbers refer to first-weekend sales (starting November 2) and they are double compared to those from March when the 3rd gen. iPad went on sale.
Apple sold three million iPads throughout the weekend, in just three days. Apple seems to count both the iPad mini and the 4th gen. iPad in its total three million numbers and it also apparently only refers to WiFi only models. We would like to see detailed numbers for the iPad mini and the full-sized iPad though.
Until we see those figures we will have to draw our own conclusion. Apple hints that “demand for iPad mini exceeded the initial supply and while many of the pre-orders have been shipped to customers, some are scheduled to be shipped later this month.” Judging by the fact that the iPad mini models were the first to sell out on pre-orders (followed by the iPad 4th gen.) we can just speculate that from the total of three million reported the iPad mini sold more units than the New iPad with Retina display.
