As we just mentioned alongside news of Microsoft confirming the Windows Phone 8 launch event, Windows 8 will be debuting a few days earlier, with an event planned in New York for October 25. Back in September, we learned about some of Microsoft’s plans for how it would introduce the Surface tablet to North America, with thirty-some temporary retail locations revealed. Now we get our first look at one of these “pop-up” stores, waiting patiently for October 26 and the start of Surface sales.
Come October 26, you’ll see Microsoft hooking interested customers up with Surface tablets from stores like this across the country. We don’t expect all of them to necessarily be this sort of kiosk layout, and just what Microsoft plans for each location is no doubt dictated by market size and the availability of retail space at each individual mall.
Still, despite their small size, kiosks could be a great way for Microsoft to get the Surface out where people can see it, and might end up attracting interest from customers who wouldn’t normally wander into a Microsoft store on their own.
