When you’ve been following rumors for as long as we’ve been keeping up with the iPhone 5, it’s a great relief to see when they finally start looking ready to become reality. For weeks now, we’ve heard that Apple’s been planning to announce its new hardware on September 12. Sure enough, Apple has started distributing invitations to just such an event, with a pretty strong hint that it will be announcing the iPhone 5.
Amid all the rumors, it’s been unclear if Apple might plan on unveiling both the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini all at once, or delay the latter for a separate announcement. While the invitation doesn’t seem to make any allusions to the iPad mini, the shadowy “5″ makes it clear that the iPhone 5 will be on the menu.
That in itself is newsworthy, as we’re never sure just what Apple’s going to name an upcoming device; back a year ago, many of us were convinced that what became the iPhone 4S would arrive as the iPhone 5 itself. The “5″ here leaves us with little doubt that the next iPhone will indeed be the iPhone 5.
If the rest of the rumored schedule surrounding the phone’s release conforms to the reality of Apple’s plans as nicely as news of this event has, we could be looking forward to the iPhone 5 hitting retail on September 21.
