Smartphone manufacturers sure don’t seem to trust users with their own phones. It took months and months (and months) of arm-twisting before Motorola finally made a tool available to allow owners of its newest devices to choose to unlock their bootloaders; even then, owners of older models were left in the dust. While that’s certainly a victory, it seems that Motorola is finding even more ways to annoy phone modders, upon the introduction of new software that detects root.

You’ll find this code in the Ice Cream Sandwich updates for the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx. If you boot into recovery with this new software, you’ll see a new status item that keeps track of not only the current root status of the phone, but whether or not it had previously been rooted in the past.

Eventually, some guys over at the XDA-Developers forum will likely figure out a way to reset that flag, and it’s not like it actually impacts use of the phones any, but there’s still a very strong “we’re watching you and we disapprove” vibe here.
