Snapdragon S4 Pro Mobile Development Platform Is Awesome, Hugely Expensive
Qualcomm and distributor BSQUARE are quite clear in their announcement of the Snapdragon S4 Pro Mobile Development Platform for Tablets that this one is for developers and vendors, instead of the general public. That’s not about to stop us from drooling just a little over its impressive hardware, even with one sky-high price tag.
For starters, the tablet’s 1.5GHz APQ8064 SoC is one of Qualcomm’s brand-new quad-core components. It’s also got an upgraded Adreno 320 GPU, instead of the 225 we see in many current dual-core S4s. Pair that beast of a chip with 2GB of LPDDR2 RAM, and you can see why we’re excited about this tablet. The WXGA 10.1-inch display sounds acceptable, if not super-high-end, but no one’s going to complain about a 13-megapixel main camera or the 32GB of flash.
One interesting feature we’d like to hear more about is the presence of seven on-board microphones, supposedly for some kind of “ultrasound” application. That sounds a lot to us like the 3D tracking system Texas Instruments demoed at the MWC earlier this year.
The new Qualcomm MDP tablet clearly has some next-gen hardware, so what’s the premium price all this gear will fetch? Just shy of $1300. Orders are open now, and should ship in two to three weeks.
Update: Check out these sick APQ8064 benchmarks.
