Smartphone fans sure talk a big game about which platform’s out-performing another, but when it comes down to it, it’s not about who boasts the loudest, but the numbers. The latest Nielsen figures are out for the US, giving us a detailed breakdown on which platforms and manufacturers have the biggest slices of the country’s smartphone market.
This data, collected during the second quarter of the year, shows Android clinging to a majority of the market, but just barely, with all such models accounting for 51% of the market. Android sales are dominated by the big three, with Motorola, HTC, and Samsung models accounting for over 82% of all Androids in use.
BlackBerry’s at 9% of the market, and iPhone models claim 34%, though comScore’s figures give a slightly different breakdown, at 11% and 32%, respectively.
To Microsoft’s embarrassment, Windows Mobile continues to hold a larger share than Windows Phone, with more than twice as many people still using older models as those who have migrated to WP7.
When we look into the Windows Phone figures a little more closely, HTC and Samsung dominate sales, with Nokia’s Lumia devices accounting for a mere 0.3% of the US smartphone market. To put that in perspective, twice that number of people are still using Palm phones.Source: Nielsen, Asymco
