We still may have several months to go until the first Windows Phone 8 hardware starts arriving, ready to run the new platform, but what are the prospects looking like for upgrades coming to existing gear, bringing them up to the just-announced Windows Phone 7.8? According to Nokia, we may not have that long of a wait at all, with the Lumia 900 getting WP7.8 in what could be just a few weeks.
Nokia’s US Twitter account responded to a question about Lumia 900 WP7.8 availability by saying that the update is “rolling out in the coming weeks”. While a literal interpretation of that response doesn’t really help us narrow down the ETA at all, going with “coming weeks” instead of something more along the lines of “coming months” definitely leaves us with the impression that we’ll be seeing the update arrive sooner, rather than later, and makes a case that it could become available in advance of the WP8 retail launch.
Nokia isn’t saying exactly what features its WP7.8 update will bring to the 900, but has implied it will be delivering as many WP8 improvements as it can, so long as they don’t rely on hardware the 900 lacks.
