We just reviewed Nokia’s Lumia 610, which included taking a look at the capabilities of the phone’s camera. While it wasn’t up to the quality of the 800 or 900, we were pleasantly surprised with how it performed (flash notwithstanding). Could the Lumia 610 be feeling a little jealousy towards its brethren, wishing it too had an eight-megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss optics? It sure seems like that might be the case, upon the discovery that the 610 is misreporting itself as the 800 in camera EXIF data.

Open up any of the sample images from our review in an image editor supporting EXIF viewing and, sure enough, you’ll see them claiming to have been taken by a Lumia 800.

This obviously doesn’t have any meaningful effect on the phone’s camera performance, and is only likely to become even a minor inconvenience if you’re working with a database containing both 800 and 610 photos, but it’s a bit of an amusing oversight. Was Nokia just sloppy and copy-and-pasted some text strings from existing code without double-checking everything?

We’d expect to see this one corrected in a future 610 update, probably lumped-in with several other minor fixes.
