ASUS Shows-Off Transformer AiO Convertible Android/Windows 8 System
Last week, ASUS released a teaser video that strongly hinted that the company would have some sort of dual-booting Android/Windows 8 tablet to demonstrated at Computex this week. Right on schedule, the manufacturer has put its Transformer AiO up on display, giving us our first look at the versatile tablet.
First off, the AiO is a whole lot larger that we were expecting, and appears to operate in a slightly different manner than we might have thought. When docked in its stand, the AiO acts as a normal Windows 8 PC, but lift it out and the screen becomes an 18.4-inch Android tablet.
From the short demo we’ve seen, the Transformer seems more like a dual Android tablet/monitor than anything. The PC part of the Transformer’s guts lives in the stand, and when you go to use the tablet part, an Android app will let you connect to the base station and control your Windows 8 session remotely. That said, it doesn’t look like the tablet is ever running Windows 8 on its own.
That might appear to limit the AiO’s usefulness a bit, but we can see how this could be pretty useful; lift the screen off your home office PC when you finish-up work for the day and carry the tablet into the living room to look up some movie reviews while you look for something to watch. Of course, our enthusiasm could be quickly mitigated by price or performance concerns, and without any technical specs available, or a suggested price point, it’s too early to make the call on the Transformer AiO.
