Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero was appointed to oversee settlement talks between Apple and Samsung — ordered by Judge Lucy Koh from the United States District Court for the Northern District of California — over the course of two days on Monday and Tuesday, May 21 and 22.

This might come as no surprise to you but the two giants have not reached an agreement, according to reports. Samsung’s CEO Choi Gee-sung and Head of the firm’s Mobile Division, Shin Jong-kyun, were present at the meeting on behalf of the South Korean manufacturer and Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, represented the Cupertino-company. With no agreement on the table the case will be back on trial in July, though both parties expressed their wishes to avoid trials.

Reports mention that the two companies were holding their positions at the negotiation: Samsung royalty fees from Apple for alleged use of its wireless transmission technology and Apple continued to insist that Samsung allegedly copied several Cupertino-products and applied the design to their own.

Since the talks were not initiated by either party there were some voices which predicted the outcome. On a similar note, Apple and HTC will sit down for similar negotiations on August 28; the outcome could be similar though.
