Yesterday’s PlayBook OS Update References Upcoming Hardware

Some images surfaced a couple weeks back that appeared to show the next PlayBook tablet from RIM, now adding a cellular modem for data connectivity. The pictures depicted hardware labeled the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook and showed the addition of a new SIM slot. Granted, we still didn’t know if we were looking at an HSPA+ or full-on LTE radio; both versions had been mentioned in past RIM leaks. Yesterday we learned about a new PlayBook OS update that was in the process of going out to users. Now that PlayBook owners have had a chance to install the software and start poking through it, some new evidence has emerged for RIM’s work on this 4G version of the PlayBook.

Lurking amongst all the other entries in the PlayBook’s help topics, there’s now a new page explaining how to inset a micro SIM card into your tablet. The text doesn’t help resolve this HSPA+/LTE issue any, and only makes general mention of PlayBook versions “that can connect to mobile networks”.

Sure, the 4G-enabled PlayBook was all but a given even before this find, but the fact that it’s in currently-released software at least makes it seem likely that we’re just about to see this new hardware arrive.
