T-Mobile Using My Account App to Advertise in Notification Bar?

A recent update to T-Mobile’s My Account app brought with it a “feature” that has many venting their anger.

The app itself is fairly helpful, letting users see their account stats quickly and easily, though bathed in plenty of “T-Mobile Magenta”.

Advertising isn’t all bad. T-Mobile, along with other carriers, have sent free text massages with offers and promotions in the past, but these can usually be be opted out of if the customer so desires. Free apps in the Play Store generally include ads that are displayed inside the app itself, while you’re using that particular app.

Recently, a new ad provider included the ability for app developers to push ads to user’s notification shade — something generally reserved for important information like new emails, missed calls, and upcoming calendar appointments. What’s more, these ads would run even when you weren’t using the app! Users revolted and began leaving negative ratings on apps that included this type of advertising. The reactions were so hash that many (most?) developers removed these ads from their apps.

T-Mobile apparently didn’t get the message and is now pushing ads into the notification area, and they’re facing the same backlash from users.
