Sony: The Technology On the Nokia PureView 808 Is Not New

You definitely heard, one way or the other, about the Nokia PureView 808, Espoo’s flagship camera phone with a whopping 41-megapixel image sensor that takes astonishing pictures. We’ve checked it out at MWC and we really liked it.

Sony on the other hand is not so excited. Even though the information is not super hot, it’s definitely worth mentioning. Paul Genge, spokesperson for Sony UK, said: “it’s quite clear it’s a development announcement more than a retailable proposition”. That being the case, Genge goes as on saying that “the technology is not new, it’s only what our cameras have done for about a year now.”

Nokia’s own technology uses proprietary oversampling algorithms for both performance and pixel binning — which is said to be better than standard binning — opposed to Sony’s pixel digital zoom. “In that respect, it’s not especially stand out, but within the mobile sector, yes it is, so I can understand why it’s drawn an awful lot of attention,” said Genge. Now raise your hands if you’re like to see a camera test and comparison between the Nokia PureView 808 and the Sony Xperia S.
