Sony Announces MT27i ‘Pepper’ As Xperia Sola (Update)

We’ve heard of the Sony MT27i Pepper for quite some time and the latest information we received was in the form of an official press render leaked a couple o days ago. At the beginning of February we also heard of the “Sola” moniker being trademarked by Sony and today the pieces fall nicely into place.

Sony has officially unveiled the Xperia Sola which will be available in black, white and red in the second quarter of the year. It features a 3.7-inch Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine and FWVGA resolution (854 x 480 pixels), a dual-core ST Ericsson NovaThor U8500 CPU clocking at 1GHz, 8GB internal memory (out of which 5GB user-accessible) but expandable via microSD memory card slot, five-megapixel main camera with 720p video recording capability, aGPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, NFC, 1320 mAh battery and Android 2.3 Gingerbread (upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich).

Other notable specs include xLOUD and 3D surround sound audio technology and “floating touch” navigation for magic web browsing without touching the screen. What is it exactly? “hovering their finger above the screen so it acts like a moving curser, without actually having to touch the screen. Once the desired link is found it can be highlighted and a simple tap will load the page. Floating touch will evolve with new user functionality and applications through software updates and engagement with developers”.

Exact availability and pricing are yet to be confirmed.

Update: According to a recent Sony France tweet, the Xperia Sola should be arriving on week 17 for €329 (around $430).
