Archos Delivers Ice Cream Sandwich to 80 G9, 101 G9 Tablets

Archos just revealed its Ice Cream Sandwich-based Child Pad tablet for kids earlier this week, but what about the prospects for seeing ICS arrive for its family of existing devices? Owners of the manufacturer’s Generation 9 tablets are in luck, with Archos today making available system software 4.0.4 for the 80 G9 and 101 G9, the company’s 8-inch and 10.1-inch tablets, bringing each up to Android 4.0.3.

Besides the core Ice Cream Sandwich update, there are a lot of additional features being added with this release. Several improvements are made to the Archos MediaCenter software, including improved 3D-out and grouping of files extracted from DVDs. The File Manager gets some new options and improved drag-and-drop handling.

Archos claims that video chat apps should now be “more robust”, but doesn’t specify what may have been changed. There’s a nice automatic-share-mounting feature to make it easier to access your files when tethered to a computer, and gamers will appreciate the support for Xbox gamepads when using the USB Host cable adapter.
