CyanogenMod 9 May Get Innovative Cornerstone Multitasking
Custom ROM enthusiasts look to CyanogenMod 9 not just as a convenient way to update their handsets to Ice Cream Sandwich, but also for the numerous customizations, hacks, tweaks, and system extensions that the project brings to Android. Tonight we get news of one such possible addition, which may bring some really impressive multitasking to the platform.
Cornerstone is an open-source project that aims to enhance Ice Cream Sandwich functionality by better managing app multitasking. Perhaps its most interesting feature is the ability to take advantage of the growing number of pixels on our phone and tablet screens in order to display multiple apps simultaneously. Aside from your main app, you can keep two additional apps running in a split-screen panel that slides into place when you need to interact with them.
Now, Cornerstone’s inclusion in CM9 isn’t a done deal, but the enthusiasm is clearly there. So long as the devs can integrate it without horribly breaking any apps or existing functionality, and making sure it won’t lead to interface problems further down the line, it’s sounding likely we’ll see Cornerstone in a future release.
