MIUI Custom ROM Starts to Go Open Source

MIUI releases are some of the most popular custom Android ROMs out there, and arguably among the most polished. Based off of work from the CyanogenMod project, MIUI has come into its own as a ROM offering a unique take on the Android UI. Unlike CyanogenMod, though, MIUI is developed by a company rather than a collective of independent developers. Xiaomi not only releases regular updates to MIUI ROMs, but has even produced its own phone running the software. So far, this has all been going on as Xiaomi kept its work on the MIUI source code closed to prying eyes. That all starts to change today, as Xiaomi has started releasing components of MIUI to the open source community.

So far, the code to a few of the apps featured in MIUI has been released, with more on the way. We haven’t seen any assurances as to just what extent the project will be made open-source, but the efforts made so far have us optimistic. Even if not everything gets put out there, any contributions Xiaomi wants to make to the Android community will be welcome. With any luck, we might start seeing certain aspects of the MIUI experience start to pop-up in other Android custom ROMs.
