Skype Updates App for Nokia Belle Handsets

Earlier this week, we brought you a couple stories about ongoing progress at updating existing Nokia Symbian Anna phones to the latest Belle code, and even a little news about Belle’s successor, Carla. Separately, we learned of the latest developments in the effort to bring Skype to Windows Phone, with news of a private beta commencing. Just in case you can’t see where we’re going with this, apparently its time for those two threads to intertwine, as Skype’s just released a new version of its app for Nokia Belle.

The big changes here sound largely cosmetic, updating the app’s look-and-feel to match more appropriately with Belle, but there are supposedly other changes going on behind-the-scenes that should lead to increased performance.

The only major downside to this release, besides the fact that most Anna users are still waiting for their Belle updates, is that the app doesn’t support video chat. Voice calling and IMs are in place, but it seems positively behind-the-times at this point to be releasing hardware with front-facing cameras but for major apps on your platform to lack the appropriate support. Maybe we’ll see that arrive before Carla ends up getting here.
