There Will Probably Be Windows Phones with Marvell in China

Marvell is an American chip maker that is best known for powering Reasearch in Motion’s BlackBerry devices but, according to a company executive, Windows Phone and Windows 8 are becoming more and more interesting.

“If there’s Windows Phones in China, there will probably be Windows Phones with Marvell in China”, said Jack Kang, director of applications processor business unit at Marvell. Microsoft is expected to make Windows Phone available in China in the second half of the year and manufacturers like ZTE and Nokia will definitely bring some budget, low-cost devices.

So far Qualcomm is the only chip maker that has its silicone powering Windows Phones. There were rumors in the past about a probably Nokia-ST Ericsson partnership for chips inside Windows Phones and now we’re hearing Marvell’s intention to enter the game.

Marvell doesn’t think “quad core makes sense at 40 from a power perspective, from a price perspective”. They are looking at China as a main market and, in a country where WiFi coverage is very scarce, delivering SoCs with no WiFi support is an approach which “works in markets like Indonesia or rural China where there’s plentiful 3G but sparse Wi-Fi coverage”.

As far as tablets are concerned, Marvell considers that the market is saturated but they might consider entering the game once Microsoft’s Windows 8 arrives.
