Official Steam App Now Available for iOS and Android Gamers
An explosion in smartphone processing power over the past couple years, alongside the introduction of very-high-quality displays, has seen the devices take on a new role in the mobile gaming market, displacing the stand-alone portable gaming consoles that had dominated the scene for decades. With smartphones now very much a part of a gamer’s collection, it only makes sense that developers aren’t just bringing games, but game-related apps to these platforms. The latest to be announced is from Valve, which has finally produced a Steam app for Android and iOS
We’ve been hearing rumors about an official Steam for Android for ages now, but so far all the releases we’ve seen have been unofficial tools from third-party developers – we just told you about one such release earlier this month. While you could get basic functionality that way, this official version includes features you won’t find anywhere else, like support for Steam chat.
It’s quite the pleasant surprise to see Valve release this app for iOS; back when we heard rumors about it last year, we expressed some concern that Apple taking a cut of in-app purchases might end up scaring Valve away.
The Steam app should help the busy gamer keep track of the latest sales on Steam games, updates to the profiles of friends, and headlines from the world of gaming news. If you’re a Steam user, and you’ve got a smartphone, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t pick this one up; the app is currently available in both the Android Market and Apple’s App Store.
