Sony Announces 8 and 13-Megapixel RGBW Coding CMOS Sensors
Sony today unveiled the development of two CMOS image sensor models targeted for smartphones and other devices. The two new sensors are using RGBW coding which allow for low-light capturing of images with low noise and high picture quality.
The two sensors also contain Sony’s HDR Movie function and will be shipping, as samples, starting the month of March. The conventional RGB (Red-Green-Blue) model has been improved with the addition of W, which represents white pixels; these offer “higher sensitivity, enabling high-quality shooting with low noise even in dark indoor or night settings”. The HDR Movie function demo can be viewed in the short video below; with it, colors can be captured even bright light scenarios.
The three sensors types will be handed out as samples according to the following time-table: 1. type 1/4 Stacked CMOS Image Sensor with approx. 8.0 effective megapixels (equipped with camera signal processing function*1) in March, 2012. 2. Type 1/3.06 Stacked CMOS Image Sensor with approx. 13.0 effective megapixels (equipped with “RGBW Coding” and “HDR Movie” functions) in June, 2012. 3. Type 1/4 Stacked CMOS Image Sensor with approx. 8.0 effective megapixels (equipped with “RGBW Coding” and “HDR Movie” functions) in August, 2012.
