How Fast is Sprint LTE?

Not long ago we asked the question, what’s the future of WiMax now that Sprint is rolling out LTE? A related question that we couldn’t answer at the time: just how fast is Sprint LTE?

According to one tester, it’s fast! Of course, there are very few areas that Sprint LTE is available, even fewer devices to test it with, and hardly anyone is using (and slowing down) the network yet. All which make testing more difficult and results potentially higher than we’ll see once it’s more broadly available.

Tests in San Antonio, Texas allegedly show Sprint’s LTE getting 45Mbps down and 3Mbps up. Also interesting is the “enhanced 3G” in the same area reaching 7.5Mbps down and 2.5Mbps up which implies that a large component of Sprint LTE is upgrading the bandwidth to its towers. Both LTE and 3G showed very low latency.

There have been some questions raised about the validity of these tests, so take them with a grain of salt until we can get corroboration. If they are accurate, and become the norm across the nation, not only will Sprint take a leap ahead in the 4G game, but they may also bring their current 3G customers along for the ride!
