Verizon Confirms Global Roaming for New LTE Smartphones
Near the end of December, we saw some leaked screenshots out of Verizon which appeared to indicate that the HTC Fireball and LG Spectrum would feature radios capable of global roaming on GSM-based networks, an ability we’d yet to see from LTE-enabled handsets on the carrier. All we saw were some database entries, though, and it seemed too early to say if we’d really see those phones arrive with global roaming enabled. Now a representative from Verizon has confirmed the carrier’s plans, noting that supported hardware will see the feature enabled in the coming months.
We haven’t heard an exhaustive list of what models are hiding this feature, but Verizon seemed to imply that this is a regular ability we’ll be seeing from future LTE models on the carrier. The Motorola Droid 4, just announced earlier this week, will be among the group gaining this ability by means of an update later in 2012. There’s no set deadline for when the first models may get it, but it will probably be before July.
