NTT Docomo And Five Others Set Up Semiconductor Joint Venture
NTT Docomo has announced that it will be creating a joint venture together with five other companies (Fujitsu Ltd., Fujitsu Semiconductor Ltd., NEC Corporation, Panasonic Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd) in order to to develop and sell semiconductor products for mobile devices.
The joint venture should be in place by the end of March 2012 and will “develop feature-rich, small-size, low-power-consumption semiconductor products equipped with modem functionality”. The products will be sold globally and will be focused on LTE and LTE-Advanced mobile communication standards. NTT Docomo will chip in $5.8 million to establish a wholly owned subsidiary which will be called Communication Platform Planning Co., Ltd. Qualcomm, maker of the largest chunk of chips utilized by OEMs in their devices will definitely see some competition starting next year.
